ICONCLASS is a multilingual classification system for cultural content introduced by RKD (Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie/Netherlands Institute for Art History). It is a widely accepted scientific tool for the description and retrieval of subjects represented in images (works of art, book illustrations, reproductions, photographs, etc.) and is used by museums and art institutions around the world.

The National Museum in Krakow was the first museum in Poland to have implemented the ICONCLASS. The system now supports subject searches within the Museum’s online collection database (http://www.katalog.muzeum.krakow.pl/en/cat). Some 500 terms, on three levels of classification, have been translated into Polish.

The National Institute for Museums and Public Collections in Poland (http://www.nimoz.pl/en/) is coordinating the preparation of a comprehensive Polish version of ICONCLASS.
